Hyundai has officially unveiled the 2013 Santa Fe at the ongoing New York Auto Show 2012. The Korean automaker has offered two variants of the Hyundai Santa Fe – the Sport and the LWB (Long Wheel Base). The 5-seater model of the Santa Fe is called the Sport, while the LWB model will feature 7-seats and will simply be called Santa Fe. The 5-seater Santa Fe sports a wheelbase of 2700 mm, while the 7-seater version has a wheelbase of 2800 mm. The length of the 7-seater Santa Fe is more at 4905 mm against the 4690 mm of the 5-seater version.
Hyundai has made several changes to the 2013 Santa Fe, with the most obvious ones being the addition of the Fluidic design language. The interiors too have got an upgrade and looks upmarket now, while Hyundai has also squeezed in more features into the crossover. The 5-seater and 7-seater Santa Fe have some design changes between them, to make them stand out against each other. These changes are limited to the front and rear end design of the vehicle.
Since Hyundai has unveiled the Santa Fe in the U.S. market for now, the company has announced the petrol engines to be offered on the vehicle. These engines will not be offered on the Indian Santa Fe as we are predominantly a diesel loving country. Hyundai will offer the Santa Fe LWB version in India early next year, bringing it through the CKD route. The engine to be offered is the new 2.2-litre R diesel engine, which is an all aluminium engine and features a variable geometry turbocharger. This engine produces 200 PS of peak power and 431 Nm of torque, which enables it to reach 0 – 100 km/h in just 9.4 seconds for the 2-wheel drive manual transmission variant. Both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive will be offered and Hyundai will offer manual and automatic transmission on the 2013 Santa Fe in India.
Hyundai has introduced the FLEX STEER system on the Santa Fe for the very first time, which produces three settings (normal, sport and comfort), matching the drivers steering requirement. The vehicle is fully loaded with features such as ABS, ESP, DBC (downhill brake control), VSM (vehicle stability management), plus hill-holding and HAC (hill-assist control). The new Santa Fe is expected to rival the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 globally.
