BT Design's ETAPE Concept Converts Skoda Yeti Into a Sporty Pickup Truck

Making its world premiere at this week's 2012 Auto Mobil International Show (AMI) in Leipzig, Germany, is a new concept model for a small Skoda pickup truck from BT Design, a subsidiary of Benet Automotive (BA), a Czech company that works closely with Skoda Auto.
The ETAPE Concept is based on the production Skoda Yeti, itself a compact crossover model. The Czech company says that the only part of the car that remained unchanged is the bonnet.
Aside from converting the Yeti into a two-door pickup truck, BT Design also added a wide body kit with flared wheel arches housing larger alloy wheels wrapped in low profile tires and also kitted out the interior.
The Czech company says that the purpose of the ETAPE is to showcase the endless possibilities of customization.
Josef Zajicek, BT Design managing director and mastermind of the project commented:
"We want to inspire individuals and the whole industry. Our aim is to provoke even greater demand for individualization of cars from both end user and manufacturers. At the same time we want to present the possibility of building a completely unique promotional vehicles to order to various companies"‘

Skoda Superb Test Drive Review

2011 Skoda Superb Review photoThe Skoda Superb name dates all the way back to 1934, when the CZech automaker first launched the vehicle. At that time the Superb measured an insane 5700 mm in length (which is the same as today’s Rolls-Royce Ghost). It featured an 8-cylinder engine (the only Skoda vehicle to feature so many cylinders till date). In 1949, the Skoda Superb was pulled off the market and in 2001, under the aegis of Volkswagen, the Superb brand was resurrected. The current Superb is in its second generation today and was launched in 2008. Skoda has launched a cheaper Ambition variant, which is the same as the Superb Elegance (sans a few features). We drive the Superb to find out how it fares out in the segment.
photo Exteriors – The Skoda Superb looks striking in its overall form. The strong three-dimensional form of the front grille and the chrome trimmings give it a substantial and solid look. The contoured lines of the bonnet extend to the headlamps while the elongated roof of the car blends into the radius of the C-pillars. Chrome trim around the windows flows into a three-dimensional element at the C-pillar. The number plate holder is not integrated in the boot cover but instead is positioned lower down on the bumper. The two-part tail lamps with one half integrated into the rear wings and the other integrated into the boot cover. These lights form a C-shaped light at night. The Skoda Superb is mounted on to 16-inch wheels and the long length of car makes it look like a limousine when viewed from the side. Overall the design is very subtle yet elegant.
 ★★★★¼
photo Interiors – The Skoda Superb is based on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ46) platform which gives it immense interior dimensions. The dashboard is well laid out and features high quality parts. The two-tone dash features black colour at the top and beige at the bottom with wood in between. The 3-spoke steering wheel feels great to hold, while buttons on the steering wheel help you to control the audio system and cruise control of the car. The use of chrome and wood has been done so tastefully that you immediately feel you are in a much more expensive car.
default photo
The air conditioner works very well and the touch screen system is easy to use. The system can be used for navigation and can be paired with your phone as well. A 6-CD changer is present in the Elegance variant while the Ambition variant features a single CD player. The puddle lights give the Skoda Superb a sense of luxury in the night and the attention to detail is truly note worthy. A sunroof is present as well, while the Nappa Ivory leather upholstery feels rich and premium. There is leather everywhere, right from the seats to the steering wheel, gear shift knob and hand brake lever. The scuff plates adorn the Superb badge.
photo The seats are very supportive and offer excellent comfort to the passengers. The front seats are 12-way electrically adjustable memory seats and thus finding the most comfortable seating position is a breeze. But its not the front seats that are the Superb’s forte. Step inside the rear seat and you are in the lap of comfort and luxury. There is acres of leg room and there is so much space that even the tallest of occupants will feel at home. The head room is not the most generous though, due to the rather high position of the rear seats. But the angle of backrest, shoulder room and thigh support are almost perfect and give you the feeling of a limousine. There are plenty of AC vents for rear passengers (including one each on the B-pillars), which ensure you are always chilled out. The rear windows and rear windscreen of the Superb posses retractable screens and there is even a leather-wrapped handle for the Skoda branded umbrella which operates with a one-touch operation.
photo The twin door opening of the fifth door gives the Superb’s boot alot of practicality. The 565-liters boot can swallow anything you throw at it.
 ★★★★¾
photo Ride, Handling and Braking – You would expect the Skoda Superb to be oriented towards a comfortable ride than outright handling but its the other way round. The Superb’s suspension has been stiffened which gives the vehicle tremendous high speed stability. You seldom feel the speeds you are doing and the Superb gives the occupants very little idea of the outside. Handling is very good for a car of this size and the Superb is quick to respond to steering inputs, turning with confidence. Featuring a electric steering system, the Superb’s handling is predictable and you can have some fun by turning sharply into corners with well contained body roll.
12006 540x375 skoda superb driving shot photo The ride quality of the car could be better though and the Superb feels a bit stiff and noisy. The suspension does transmit some of the undulations on the road but does not unsettle passengers badly. Ride quality is flat at best and it only improves as the speedometer goes northwards. Featuring an array of systems including ABS, EBD, TCS, ESP, HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistant), the Superb’s brakes are nothing short of Superb. Brake bite is excellent and so is the stopping capabilities of the car but we would have loved better feel from the brake pedal. Skoda has altered the ground clearance for Indian roads and jacked it up by 20 mm to 158 mm. This ensures that speed-breakers don’t trouble the under-body of the Superb.
 ★★★★☆
photo Performance – The Skoda Superb is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which produces 140 PS of peak power at 4200 RPM and 320 Nm of peak torque between 1750-2500 RPM. The engine is mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission with Tiptronic manual gear changing option. This engine is a slightly noisy but settles down as speeds build up. There is some lag lower down the revv range, which translates into a quick burst of power once the turbo spools up. 0 – 100 km/h comes up in a shade below 13 seconds, while the top speed is in the region of 190 km/h.
photo The 2.0-litre CR diesel engine is fantastic but the Superb is not light by any means with a weight of 1608 kgs hampering performance to a certain extent. The diesel motor provides strong mid range and punch with decent top end rush. The DSG transmission is smooth and shifts gears quickly. But you really need to mash the throttle for it to downshift to the desired cog in D mode. This however changes once you are in S mode. The lack of paddle shifts is quite surprising and one needs to manually shift gears through the Tiptronic function to really enjoy the Superb. Skoda claim a mileage of 17.2 km/l (ARAI figures) but one can expect close to 9 km/l in city driving conditions. The Superb features HHC (Hill Hold Control), which holds the vehicle for 2 seconds on declines before rolling backwards. The company also offers tyre pressure monitoring system, which is a useful feature.
 ★★★★¼
photo Conclusion – The Skoda Superb offers class leading space, high quality interiors and good performance from its petrol and diesel engines. The ride quality might not be carpet like and the styling might not be dramatic but the Superb offers tremendous value of money to the buyers. With the launch of a cheaper Ambition variant priced at Rs. 20.76 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai) for the 1.8 TSI MT, the Superb will appeal to more people. There is little doubt then, this Skoda is indeed simply Superb.

2014 Skoda Fabia Looks Fab, New Details Emerge

2014 Skoda Fabia MQB photoThe next generation Skoda Fabia is all set to hit showrooms in 2014 and a Czechoslovakian website claims that these images are the real deal. The Mk3 Fabia will be an all new model with significant changes being made to the vehicle. The 2012 Skoda Fabia will be based on Volkswagen’s MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform and will feature more interior room and an increased boot as well. The current Fabia has a boot of 315-litres, which will be increased to 350-litres with the all new Fabia. This boot space will be among the best in its class, second only to the Honda Jazz.
The 2014 Skoda Fabia looks quite sharp and the design changes give it a very appealing look. Based largely on the Skoda VisionD Concept, the next generation Fabia will be lighter and feature a longer wheelbase. The new Skoda Fabia will be powered by the next generation of engines, which would include a modern 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder TDI unit and the 1.2-litre petrol engine. Both these engines will offer similar levels of power as the current engines but with increase efficiency and better driveability. The next generation Volkswagen Polo will share most of its components with the next generation Fabia and is expected to arrive around the same time.
The current generation Skoda Fabia was launched in 2007 and brought to India in the same year. The Mark 2 (5J) model also spawns the Roomster and Scout versions of the car. Skoda gave the Fabia a mid-life minor facelift in 2010 and the next generaton model as highly awaited, since the MK2 Fabia will be 7 years old by then. Production will take place at Volkswagen’s Chakan facility and the next generation Fabia will spawn the second generation Rapid in 2015. Prices are expected to remain more or less the same as competition intensifies in the Indian market.

Renault To Launch More Powerful Fluence Soon

2012 Renault Fluence India photoThe Renault Fluence is one of the best D-segment cars around, with only a few things going against it. The small Renault dealership network is one of them, while the other is the lack of power in the diesel Fluence. The Renault Fluence is powered by a 1.5-litre K9K, diesel engine, which produces 105 BHP of peak power at 4000 RPM and 240 Nm of peak torque at 2000 RPM. This engine gives the Fluence a good blend of mid-range power and fuel economy. But the diesel engine has significant turbo lag and the power figures trail severally in comparison to rivals like the Skoda Laura (140 PS) and Chevrolet Cruze (150 PS).
Now Renault will be launching a more powerful version of the Renault Fluence in the month of April 2012. This version will get the addition of new features and increase in power for the diesel variant. These upgrades have been done by Renault after listening to customer feedback. Renault could offer the 110 hp version of the K9K engine, which does duty on the international model. This engine features a diesel particulate filter and will give a slight boost to the performance of the Fluence. A small increase in torque is also expected, making the car better to drive in the city.
The 1461 cc K9K 896 diesel motor will not bring the Fluence closer in performance to the more powerful competitors but will certainly better the performance of the vehicle slightly. We love the turbo whoosh from the diesel engine in the Fluence and that is something which will continue with the more powerful version. Renault could also consider bringing in a dual clutch transmission (DCT) on the diesel variant as almost every diesel car in the segment is now available with an automatic gearbox.

Skoda new 7 seater Yeti

Skoda Yeti Offroad1 photoThe Skoda Yeti is one fine machine, but not really selling well in India, due to its rather compact dimensions. Furthermore its only a 5-seater, which does not make family car buyers consider it. Indians love 7-seaters, even if the last seat is just for name sake. Case in point is the recently launched Mitsubishi Outlander, which has got two additional jump seats at the rear to make it a 7-seater. Now Skoda is working on a 7-seater version of the Yeti SUV, which could be launched by the end of the year.
The Skoda Yeti is currently sold in 5-seater guise, with a decent boot. Skoda will have to increase the length of the crossover to fit in additional seats on the third row. But don’t expect the third row seats to offer good legroom for adults. Instead the last two seats could be jump seats for children. While this might not make the Yeti a people carrier, it will atleast make many consider the Yeti for the additional seats itself. Skoda will certainly charge more for the 7-seater Yeti over the 5-seater one.
What engine the Skoda Yeti 7-seater will use is not confirmed yet, but the current 2.0-litre TDI unit (140 PS, 320 Nm) will almost certainly be on offer. Skoda will offer the 7-seater Yeti in 2-wheel drive trim initially to keep costs down, as most buyers don’t feel the need for a 4-wheel drive system in their cars. An automatic DSG equipped gearbox could be offered as well. This will certainly boost the appeal of the Yeti, which is an extremely capable vehicle, but does not have the commanding position that SUV buyers look for.

Skoda’s New SUV Snowman, Launch In 2014

Skoda VisionD Concept photo
Skoda has been very open about its plans to launch two SUVs in the coming years. The company feels that the SUV segment is very emotional and has huge scope. An SUV bigger than the Yeti and a compact SUV below the Yeti are being planned for launch by the middle of this decade. While details of the compact SUV is still under wraps, Skoda has revealed the name for its bigger SUV, which will sit above the Yeti in the company’s portfolio. The new bigger SUV from Skoda has been named Snowman and will arrive in 2014, while the compact SUV will arrive in 2016.
The Skoda Snowman will be based on the Volkswagen Tiguan platform and will feature the company’s new design language showcased on the VisionD Concept. The Snowman being based on the Tiguan has alot of advantages, with component sharing being the primary one. The Snowman will use the same engines found on the Tiguan, which include a 2.0-litre TDi unit, producing 170 PS of power and mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. While Volkswagen offers two different versions of the Tiguan (one for on-road driving and one for off-road), we doubt Skoda will do the same. Instead the company will focus on increasing volumes by pricing it aggresively, so expect the Skoda Snowman to be priced at around Rs. 20 lakhs.
The Skoda Yeti uses the Polo Mk4 and Golf Mk5 components and is due for an upgrade by 2014. These new models are imperative for Skoda’s 2018 growth mission to achieve sales figures of 1.5 million units per annum. These vehicles will play a vital role for Skoda’s growth in the three important markets which account for a chunk of its sales – India, China and Russia. With these new vehicles, Skoda indeed is going product offensive in the coming years.

--Skoda To Launch New Octavia In India In 2013--

Skoda-Octavia_RS_2010_1024x768_wallpaper_01Skoda holds a very strong and important share in the automobile market and one of the model that actually helped it rise from nothing was Skoda Octavia. It was the best selling model for the brand and clocked enormous sales. Now that the car is no longer in production because of the BS IV norms implementation, we really miss it and for one long year it was being speculated that the Skoda Rapid will fill the gap of Octavia, however it turned out to be an all new model.
But we are glad to hear that Skoda is planning to bring the Octavia brand back next year. At the 2012 Auto Expo, Winfried Vahland, Chairman, Board of Management for Skoda Auto stated that he likes the name Octavia and assured that next year they will bring it back.

image – Skoda Octavia RS

As per speculations the company will replace the Laura brand with Octavia brand name which it thinks is fair from the market point of view. The next generation Octavia will be showcased at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and is codenamed as ‘A7’. The production version of the same is likely to be introduced in the market by end of 2013.
Another interesting fact is that the Octavia will be built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform that will make the car even bigger than the ongoing Skoda Laura. We really can’t wait to see the next generation Octavia and are definitely looking forward to the Geneva Motor Show next year.
