e powered by a 125cc, 4-stroke, Bike Features

Honda MSX125 Blacke powered by a 125cc, 4-stroke, single cylinder engine with a maximum power of 9.7 HP and should be able twist 11 Nm of torque. Fuel will be fed to the engine through Honda’s programmed fuel-injection system (PGM-FI) and the transmission is achieved through a 4-speed gearbox. The list of other features include LCD digital display, projector headlamps, LED tail- ights and what Honda calls upside-down suspension.
The mini street bike with 12-inch alloy wheels weighs about 102 kgs and has a fuel tank capacity of 5.48-litres. The MSX125 will be manufactured at Honda’s plant in Thailand and will be made available in four colors, namely Asteroid Black Metallic, Pearl Himalayas White, Pearl Queen Bee Yellow, and Pearl Valentine Red. Seems, there is an opening for mini-segment in the two-wheeler market too. Honda CB500X , Hondas New Bike with Specifications

2013 Honda CB500X India
Growing its 500cc motorcycle family, Honda has unveiled the CB500X Adventure motorcycle, which is powered by the 500cc, DOHC, parallel-twin motor from the CBR500R and CB500F. This liquid-cooled engine produces around 50 HP of power and is targeted towards sport touring. Thus the Honda CB500X has a wide handlerbar, taller seat and a fuel tank which makes it easier for the rider to move. A fuel tank capacity of 15.5-litres is offered on the CB500X which is similar to its siblings.
The suspension system and tyres are same as the other two 500cc bikes which Honda unveiled along with the CB500X. Thus front forks, rear monoshock, 120 section front tyres and 160 section rear tyres are offered on the Honda CB500X. This motorcycle is the heaviest of the 500cc trio, weighing 195 kgs. It is offered in just one color – matte black metallic and will go on sale in the States by April next year. Honda hasn’t announced the pricing of the CB500X yet.
Honda-CB500X-IndiaHonda-CB500XIn typical Honda fashion, the CB500X also gets optional ABS just like its siblings. The windscreen is adjustable and the instrument cluster is completely digital. Bikes like the CB500X are not very popular in India, even though our roads call for an adventure motorcycle. Honda is unlikely to offer the CB500X in the Indian market. We speculate the pricing of the CB500X will start around $5000 in the US, with the ABS version be priced at a $500 premium.

Yamaha Ray Details and review

Price OTR Mumbai: Rs. 55,000/-
2012 Yamaha Ray Test Ride ReviewScooters have all of a sudden come into focus in the Indian market, so much that every 2-wheeler manufacturer is launching more of them. Just recently Hero MotoCorp sold more scooters than TVS in the domestic market and the world’s largest 2-wheeler manufacturer is said to be boost its scooter production. The latest entrant in the scooter segment is Yamaha with the Ray. The Japanese bike company is betting big on the scooter market and expects the Yamaha Ray to boost volumes for them. The Yamaha Ray has a lot going for it and we couldn’t resist getting our hands on this scooter. So let’s find out if the Ray has the Yamaha DNA in it!

2012-Yamaha-Ray-10Styling – First look at the Yamaha Ray and you immediately notice how short are its dimensions, the low stance, and the very familiar edgy design panels which start from headlight to the tail light. It has been garnished with graphics, sharp lines and slashes on the side panels which join into the tail light flawlessly. The sleek exhaust is finished in black and comes with heat shield which has vents scooped out on it. The headlight dominates the front with its sheer size and has integrated turn indicators. According to Yamaha, the ‘v-cut’ shape at the front gives it a shape which looks like ‘jewellery’. We couldn’t agree more on it as it almost looks like a necklace from a certain angle. The three different colors used on the scooter, the grey-colored forks and the body color gets all the attention.
Instrument Cluster and Switch Gear – The triangular instrument cluster blends in with the overall design. It uses clear lens for superior visibility, be it day or night. At the top, there is the analog speedo-meter with trip meter in the middle. The solitary turn indicator lights and the high beam indicator give a digital feel when lit. The lower part has the fuel gauge. The needles used in these gauges are very distinct and finicky; the speedo-meter needle hops around while it indicates the current speed. Switch gear is of good quality and has a positive feel to every click and doesn’t feel cheap like its rivals.
Ergonomics – The Yamaha Ray has a very comfortable seating position, upright and not so wide. Saddle height is really low which comes as a good news for short people. The seat is well cushioned; it’s a perfect balance for comfort on short trips and will help in long journeys as well. The grab handle at the back is a bit of stretch and small in size. Rear view mirror’s are very easy to adjust and offer very wide view of what is behind.
Performance and Gearbox – A feather touch to the self-start and the 113cc 4-stroke scooter comes to life in a very smooth manner; start up sound is very soothing to the ears. The Yamaha engine produces 7 HP of power at 7500 RPM and 8.1 Nm of torque at 5000 RPM. Since it weighs just 104 kgs, the scooter feels peppy and acceleration is brisk up to 60 km/h despite a pillion on-board, after which the scooter struggles to reach 75 km/h. Power delivery is peppy and the throttle responds to riders inputs quickly. There’s hardly any lag from the CVT gearbox in the beginning, which gives it good low end torque and mediocre mid-range. Performance is not the party piece of this scooter, but it has excellent drivability in the city and fuel efficiency.
Ride, Handling and Braking – Outright performance may not be Yamaha Ray’s party piece, but the handling is. It rides on a common set of 90 x 100 tires and 10-inch wheels, but has impressive grip levels. The chassis is stiff and the engine being a stressed member; it offers massive confidence when pushed into corners. The telescopic suspension geometry is well executed and it gives an excellent blend of cornering ability and ride quality. Ride quality at the front is stiff and you tend to feel the bumps at low speeds but as speed builds up, the suspension stays flat. The pillion is always comfortable because the rear suspension is slightly soft.
The Yamaha Ray sets a benchmark when it comes to handling because of the reassuring Yamaha DNA it carries along. The 130mm drum brakes at the front and rear do a splendid job of slowing you down from higher speeds. Thanks to the compact dimensions and low kerb weight, it stops without any sideways action, but emergency braking will see the front forks diving in. Manoeuvring in the city is a hassle free job, u-turn radius is short and it’s very nimble and agile in the city, thanks to the short wheelbase and re-assuring front suspension which doesn’t even let you down while making quick high speed lane changes. High-speed stability is excellent and there is very little wind blast.
Miscellaneous – The low mounted headlight has a good wide spread, but on those lonely dark highways, high beam doesn’t seem sufficient enough. The 128 mm ground clearance may seem low on paper, but with stiff suspension, we didn’t scrap the belly anywhere despite pillion on-board. Fit and finish is good, but we did find the brake levers at the front on the fragile side and lots of exposed bolts. The under seat storage of 15.5-litres doesn’t run deep and thus you can’t store a full face helmet. It is only good for keeping knick knacks or a small helmet. The hook which is placed above the floor board in most scooters makes it way on the top in the Yamaha Ray; convenient if you are carrying edible stuff, so your feet don’t touch them and also useful if you are carrying longer bags. The leg shield does protrude sometimes when you exit the scooter in a hurry, all though it will vary with different people with different sizes. Side stand and rear view mirrors come as standard fitment. Since this scooter will help Yamaha pick up volumes, we hope the limited number of service stations would be capable of handling the demands and provide quality service as well.
Conclusion – The long awaited Yamaha scooter finally arrives and it offers its customers a good proposition with a quality product and value for money price tag. The Yamaha DNA automatically gives it the best in class handling and dynamics package. Scooter enthusiasts are disappointed but we urge Yamaha to offer powerful scooters in the future. But right now, we think the Yamaha Ray is the best entry level scooter you can buy in the market today.

Students Develop Motorcycle With Zero Turning Radius

Spherical Drive Motorcycle
A group of engineering students at San Jose University have come up with a concept of spherical drive motorcycle which will have zero turning radius. Shocked but its true, the prototype is in the final stage of development. The team motivated by Segway’s concept of self-balancing technology thought of applying the same concept in motorcycles to validate the concept. The team consisted of three engineers – Max Ratner, Henry Li and Andrew Parmar. They decided to apply the concept of omnidirectional drive system to the motorcycle. After brainstorming for days, they came up with the final design consisting of two massive spheres enclosed in a tube cage.
The spheres are controlled through three electric motors which provide inputs through software for keeping the rig vertical which gives a zero turning radius. The bike requires no special skills for riding and could also be ridden by physically handicap people, which is a major advantage. Apart from it the spherical drive, it also offers advantages of computer-aided crash avoidance and parking. The team is also working on feasibility of applying its concept to fork lift where maneuverability is a big advantage.
The team has got the support from some local sponsors in the form of cash and development support. The first prototype is in final stages and requires only some software programming and then it will be ready for demonstration. The team is aware of disadvantages and are working to minimize the same. The students are getting appreciation from all the corners for their effort and have motivated their fellow engineering classmates to work on creative ideas and execute them without fear of failure.

Kawasaki Ninja 650R Will Start jurny From 9th August

The launch of the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 650R has been confirmed for the 9th of August 2012. Bajaj Auto has sent out invites for the launch event, which will take place in Pune. Present on the occasion would be Mr. Amit Nandi (Vice President, Probiking) and Mr. Rajiv Bajaj (Managing Director, Bajaj Auto). The 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 650R has been a long time coming but was delayed due to the high demand in overseas markets. More over, due to the difficultly in attaching a saree guard, the launch was further delayed by a few weeks time. Dealers on their part are taking bookings already.
Kawasaki recently unveiled the 2013 Ninja 650R, which gets new colors and ABS (as an option). However this model is not being launched in India currently. Currently Bajaj Auto locally assembles the Ninja 650R through CKD kits imported from Thailand. The Japanese automaker has allocated more quantity of the Ninja 650R for the Indian market this time around and hence bookings are not expected to close anytime soon. Bajaj Auto doesn’t plan to locally manufacture the Ninja 650R anytime soon as the company doesn’t find enough volumes to justify local production.
The 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 650R has minor improvements, which make the motorcycle slightly better than its predecessor. While the power and torque output remain the same at 72 BHP and 65 Nm, the parallel twin motor is got minor tweaks to improve the power delivery at low and mid-range of the power band. A stiffer frame also debuts on the Ninja 650R which improves the handling of this middle-weight motorcycle. The company has also incorporated a eco-mode to boost mileage. Expect a small price hike on the Ninja 650R as the depreciating Rupee will reflect in the import costs of the bike.

This Engine To The Duke 350

2013 KTM 350SXF Dirt Bike photo
KTM has revealed details and pictures of its 2013 dirt bike line-up. The Austrian automaker has not revealed the power of the bikes but has revealed the details about the engine. There are a host of new engines including 149cc, 249cc, 250cc, 350cc and 450cc engines. All these engines are single-cylinder motors mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Now with Bajaj Auto and KTM developing a 350cc Duke for the Indian market, could the recently unveiled 350cc engine power it? The Bajaj-KTM 350 is expected to be launched in 2013.
The 350cc engine revealed by KTM recently powers the 2013 KTM 350 SX-F. It features a 4-stroke, liquid-cooled, spark-ignition engine. This engine could be adapted for the Duke 350, with power and torque figures tuned accordingly. KTM has made changes to the 350cc engine by giving it a new cylinder head, enlarged water jacked, resonance chamber, Panki rod and high tech die-cast cases. The Austrian company has also enlarged the EFI throttle body from 42mm to 44mm.
The 2013 KTM 350 SX-F (pictured here) uses upside down forks at the front, which is made by WP. The frame is a central tubular one, made from chrome molybdenum steel tubes. Both the front and rear feature disc brakes which are 260mm and 220mm in size respectively. The fuel tank capacity is 7.5-liters, while the weight is just 105 kgs. Similar dirt bikes are available with lower capacity engines, but the 250cc and above engines are 4-stroke, while the ones below it are 2-stroke engines.

Italy To India – The Aprilia

Aprilia Showroom Pune photoWe have been hearing that to challenge KTM, Italian versatile two-wheeler manufacturer Aprilia is going to enter India. Low capacities Aprilia 125s or 200s may turn into reality sooner or later, but their bigger sibling are currently being sold in India through Piaggio commercial vehicle dealerships as CBUs. We visited such a dealership in Pune to find out what Aprilia has to offer in India as of now. You’ll be stunned to see the type of bikes displayed over there, from World Superbike Championship dominator RSV4 Factory to innovative tourer Mana 850 GT. There are total 8 versions of 4 bikes Aprilia has to offer for us – RSV4, Tuono V4, Dorsoduro 1200, Mana 850 GT. Let’s find out the details.
Dordoduro 1200: A single look is enough to understand why Aprilia gave birth to this beast. It’s basically a motard bike similar to BMW’s Hyper motard bikes. Some say that BMW copied the design language from Aprilia, we better not get into it! With bare minimum body panels and parts to show off, everything on this beast is meant to support the function of pure performance. First thing which popped up in my mind when I first saw the bike was how one could ride it? Because it has its seat located almost 3 feet above the ground! Broad handlebars, long wheelbase and transverse mounted suspension, all it boasts is performance with comfort. The mixed frame design, constructed with a sturdy tubular steel trellis mated to lateral aluminum plates, is highly acclaimed by both enthusiasts and experts. It achieves the perfect balance between agility and precision being directly connected to the road. It has solid casted aluminum swing arm connected to side mounted cantilever type Sachs monoshock at rear.

Honda To Double Service Outlets

Honda CBR1000RR Wallpaper photoLast week Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India launched the Dream Yuga in India. The company also revealed its new brand identity, which clearly showcases that the Japanese automaker is targeting the common man in India. Honda wants volumes, it wants to overtake Bajaj and Hero for the numero uno position in 2-wheelers by 2020. There is no doubt that Honda will succeed in overtaking Hero in the later half of this decade. The reason is that Honda has an extremely good R&D and a good line-up of products, something which Hero lacks in. Eventually it is going to be Honda vs Bajaj, with the trend shifting to higher capacity motorcycles (100cc buyers now preferring 125cc, etc).
Honda has also roped in Akshay Kumar for the being the brand ambassador of the 2-wheeler company for the next 5 years. While this may have no effect on buyers of the Unicorn or the CBR, it surely will pull many 100cc buyers to the Honda brand. Honda knows that in order to beat Hero, it has to expand its dealership network and address service issues. The company is now planing to double its touch points to 2000 by March 2013. Currently Honda has 1000 such outlets, where sales and service of Honda 2-wheelers takes place. It will also alot new dealerships near existing Hero and Bajaj showrooms. Honda is also receiving applications from existing Hero dealers, who want to convert their existing dealerships into Honda showrooms.
Currently Honda has a 15% market share in the Indian 2-wheeler market, with majority of the volumes coming from its three scooters (where it has a 50% + market share). Hero on the other hand has 4000 outlets and 45% market share, while Bajaj Auto has a 20% market share. Honda is also looking to expand its dealership network in rural markets, where it thinks it can achieve good numbers by selling the Dream Yuga. Till the separation with Hero, Honda avoided direct competition with them, but now the Japanese automaker plans to take Hero head-on in every segment.

Hyosung Developing Off-Road Bike For India

Hyosung Off Roader India photoHyosung is planning to launch an off-road motorcycle, specific for the Indian market. This off-road motorcycle will be called the Hyosung RT250D and will be a bigger version of the RT125D, which is currently sold in global markets. This new off-roader will be launched around April 2013 and will be assembled in Wai, near Pune. The company has invested close to Rs. 65 crore in setting up of a second assembly facility, which will have three assembly lines producing 10 bikes per line, per shift every day. This assembly line will be operational soon and will also churn out the upcoming Hyosung GT250R and the GV650 cruiser.
While off-roader motorcycles have not really taken off in the Indian market, one can expect the Hyosung RT250D to create a niche for itself. Power will come in from the same 250cc V-twin motor which does duty in the GT250R, so don’t expect pricing to be below Rs. 1.5 lakhs. The 250cc engine produces close to 26 BHP of power and has good top end punch. Honda is planing to launch the CRF250L motorcycle in the Indian market as well, which would go head on with the RT250D. Do we really need off-roading motorcycles in India, just because our roads look off-road!
